Parliamentary elections

Parliamentary elections for the 90 deputies in the National Assembly of Slovenia will be held on 21 September 2008. In total, 19 parties filed to run in the election, including all nine parliamentary parties. Currently, the government consists of 4 parties (the Slovenian Democratic Party – SDS, New Slovenia – NSi, the Slovenian Public Party – SLS and the Pension Party – DeSUS). Janez Janša is the Prime Minister and the centre-right parties have a majority in parliament. According to the latest public survey, the possible winner of the elections might be the Slovenian Democratic Party (right-wing; leader: Janez Janša) or the Social Democrats (left-wing; leader: Borut Pahor). Both these parties will probably gain more than 20 seats in the 90-seat parliament. However, the future coalition will probably be made up of right-wing or left-wing parties. They both have the support of around 50% of the voters, according to the latest public survey.

Possible right-wing coalition would control 47 seats: SDS, SLS+SMS, SNS, DeSUS

Possible left-wing coalition would control 49 seats: SD, ZARES, LDS, DeSUS

The right- and left-wing parties have quite similar programmes on major economic issues. The major internal issues in our view are labour market reform, the final phase of privatisation, pension system reform, labour tax reform, investment in the railway system, and investment in education and science.
